In praise of : PSYCH

Posted by september29th on Feb 27 2010 | HDTV, Pop Culture

Just confirmed that Chivo is going to be heading down to San Antonio this afternoon… I should be running around the house getting a number of chores done, but I’m saddled firmly onto the couch watching episodes of Psych.

A show Fin got me into about a year ago and it’s possibly my favorite show she DVR’s. The show itself is pretty formulaic. It’s about a guy with photographic memory, pretending to be a guy with Psychic abilities. He has a partner who is really just the voice of reason and follows protocol for the most part.

The dialogue is amazing tho’. Which is the reason why I tune in every week. If you haven’t seen this, do so. You’ll dig it verily.

Did I also mention that the show has an iPhone case that I would totally snag? I need to update my Gen 1 iPhone at some point this year and this may help convince me to do so quicker…

Super Bowl XLIV a retrospective…

Posted by september29th on Feb 07 2010 | HDTV, Pop Culture

The sad bastard pictured above is the losing Quarterback of this years Super Bowl…  wanted to post a quick review of what I thought were highlights.

Gambling : Didn’t wager any money on the game… but if I had I think I would have been ok.   I urged everyone to stay away from the spread yesterday and look into the money lines.  I found some for the Saints last night around +230…  action I would have picked up.

I would have lost a little money on Pete Townshend who I thought was a lead pipe lock to smash his Strat onto the stage after phoning in a shitty WHO performance.   I wonder what relic the NFL will dig up for next year…   My guess is Garth Brooks.   Wonder what kinda action I could get on that right now?

Did a little count down on the National Anthem…  I rattled of a fast 1 minute 40 seconds.  My guess is that it made the under with ease.  So I would have picked up a little money on that one.

Most importantly :  Who gave you the idea to put down money at 11/2 odds for ORANGE gatorade?   *this guy*

Commercials: All in all, I thought the commercials were a little weak…  I was happy to see however that “Animals” trended downward.  While a few companies featured them it wasn’t over the top like last year.

Winners : Bud Light, voice box – was a little throw away commercial that really made me smile.  It had a great little back handed commentary on music today and I dug that a lot.

Google: had a really nice advertisement.  It was so incredibly well executed that I think its going to get a lot of nods tomorrow.

Snickers: Turned in a great spot by showcasing everyones favorite Betty White.   They then closed it out by confirming that Abe Viogoda is alive and breathing.   That mad me smile.   (You’re still on my dead pool Abe)

Volkswagen:  Gotta love a company who just became the largest car manufacture  - not take the time to mention it and show case a commercial where every one plays “slug dub”.   You gotta love any commercial that has a kid sock an old guy in the nuts.

Losers : As much as I would like to sit back and point out some bad commercials…  I can’t think of any that really stand out as being out-loud-shitty.  That’s not to say that I found most of them enjoyable…  I just don’t recall one at the moment that I should shit on.

I take that back…   How about the United States Air Force, not getting the rights to a White Stripes song and getting a couple of hacks to fucking rip it off to the point where its recognizable but enough to get their legal department to approve it.   Shitty execution in my opinion.  And I’m not trying to shit on the Air Core.  They’re ace in my book.  That was so bottom shelf tho’.

Season 5 of LOST

Posted by september29th on Jan 21 2009 | HDTV

Season 5 of LOST kicked off tonight… I’m tuning in because I’m 4 seasons and hundreds of hours into the story line.

I’ve seen about 3/4 of the season premiere… and I’m struggling to find a reason to keep watching this show anymore.

I just need to see it through and not complain along the way…

New ekobase should drop in a few days. be on the look out for that.

In appreciation of : Mad Men

Posted by september29th on Nov 05 2008 | HDTV, Pop Culture

By admission… I’m hopping onto this Television Series very late. I wasn’t really to sure what the show was about but I knew that both Bill Simmons (sports guy) and Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) were really into the show.

I know that the creator of the show had something to do with the Soprano’s so I assumed it had a something to do with the mob.

When I later found out that it had to do with Marketing/Advertisement in nYc in the 1960′s my curiosity peaked.

I’m only three episodes into the first season and I’m quite certain that I’ll be adding the rest of the Season discs to my Netflix queue this evening.

As bad as this may sound… I’m hoping that they can square away cameo’s by the following people.

1.) Morrissey
2.) Jason Gnewikow (formerly of the Promise Ring) – who sorta reminds me of Peter Cambel. I haven’t seen what Jason looks like in nearly 8 years but given what he does – I think it would be an awesome nod.

Debate Nite

Posted by september29th on Sep 26 2008 | HDTV, Pop Culture

Readers of this blog won’t be surprised to hear that I tuned into the debate tonight and thought Obama did incredibly well…

Watched a good bit of the debate on our local PBS HD feed but got word that CNN HD had charting tools that gauged viewers reactions to the debate.

I’m a little unsure how this tool is beneficial for viewers….   I occasionally looked down to see the needle move when a canidate spoke…   but found myself focusing on McCain and Obama and forgot all about the pie-charts and seismographs on the screen.

high encourage viewrs to stay away from this…  its far more rewarding to watch the debate without the clutter.

Tru Blood

Posted by september29th on Sep 14 2008 | HDTV, Pop Culture

Can’t believe that I’m fallin’ for the new HBO show True Blood…   well, thats not completely true.  It was created by the guy who did Six Feet Under (which I loved) and its about vampires so I sorta wanted to watch it and hate it completely.

The show is surprisingly sexual…  which also should be all that surprising seeing how I can’t think of a HBO Sunday show that didn’t border on soft pr0n.

I just figured it would be a little more horror focused.

Anyhoo, the show is pretty awesome so far.  I’m only 2 episodes in so the series could totally jump the shark in the coming weeks.

Cleaning out the DVR

Posted by september29th on Sep 02 2008 | DISH, DVD, Film, HDTV

Occurred to me this morning that if we turn in our DISH DVR that I’m going to loose out on a lot of programing that I haven’t gotten around to watching.

I plowed through an obscene amount of Will and Grace this morning… and this afternoon I’ve caught 2 movies that I’ve had on the DVR for a few months.

The first movie I watched was Ghost Rider.  A movie based on a Marvel comic I never read but have a soft spot for because my cousin Miguel really enjoyed the comic.   Outside of knowing that he’s a flaming (fire… not gay) leather clad - skeleton on a motorcycle – I knew nothing about his background.   I recall Henry Rollins doing a song about him on the Crow soundtrack… which I never quite got because it has to be one of the strangest song selection on the disc.   I should totally do a post on my favorite soundtracks.

Anyhoo… watched the movie and remembered why I avoided this in the theater.  The film has Nick Cage phoning it in… can’t blame him tho’.  The special affects get top billing and they’re not exactly very good either.

If you haven’t seen this – don’t it’s a total snore.

I also got around to watching the Black Dahlia.  A movie that wouldn’t be all that bad if it didn’t try so hard to be Noir.   If you’re up for catching some nice hairstyles – I recommend this one highly.

… back to TimeWarner?

Posted by september29th on Aug 31 2008 | HDTV, Life

Had to make a tough decision over the weekend…   my DISH Network contract expired at the beginning of August and we recently received a tasty offer from Time Warner Cable for TV and (fasteR) high-speed internet.

I can honestly say that the two 18 or so months I had Dish Network was great.  There’s a couple of things that I disliked tho’…   1.) you needed to have a Telephone line or a Ethernet device to download programing updates to your box.  If you don’t have either of those you have to pony up 6 dollars a month as a penalty.  2.) I can honestly say that DISH worked through the fiercest of thunder/rain storms…   the dish however would occasionally blank out on the clearest of days.  This can happen with Cable TV also tho’.   3.) A great deal of our $avings were tied into the first 12 months of having the dish…  the last 6 months got a little pricey and that’s what instigated the wandering eye for cable needs.

Instillation is set for Thursday afternoon/evening.  I’m really not looking forward to returning to Time Warners terrible DVR.  blegh

Will & Grace

Posted by september29th on Aug 10 2008 | HDTV

When I moved to Detroit in the summer of 1996…  I spent 11 or so years never watching much on TV.  I would watch sports pretty regularly but I don’t recall watching anything else with the exception of some HBO Sunday shows and that was really just programing on one channel.

Anyhoo… when I was in Minnesota a few months ago, I was up one night doing some email and I caught an episode on a local affiliate.

I forget what the episode was about… but it was insanely funny so I baked it into my nightly viewing habits while hanging in the twin cities.

While watching TV this week I saw that it was playing on Lifetime HD so I set my DVR to stun…  its apparently on a lot because I had 20 or so episodes on my DVR.  I watched almost all of them and hit the FF button through a few of the slower ones…   I can safely say however that I’m  pretty much hooked.

The show isn’t particularly great or anything…  it has a few good lines in it per episode and the cameo’s are great.   The product placement and pluggs are a little too much at times but it doesn’t bother me much seeing how its off the air now.

Anyhoo…  i’m a total “fan-a-low” now.  (W&G episode reference)

.rollie, who wants Big Bang to return to the airwaves.
