Happy Halloween

Posted by september29th on Oct 31 2006 | Life

Wanted to quickly extend Happy Halloween wishes to everyone out there. My plans to wear KISS make up to work fell through last night, so i’ll just be heading into work in my plain old attire. I think our neighborhood is going to be very busy with kids making visits so I’ll be busy tonight handing out goodies.

Devils Night in San Antonio = Paws on the Patio

Posted by september29th on Oct 30 2006 | Elliot, Life

It occurred to me early this morning that today will be the first
time in 10 years that I won’t be in Detroit for Devils Night… for
those not in the know, Devils Night was an evening reserved for
reckless arson in the city of Detroit. There’s a number of ways to
look at it… at the end of the day, fires need to be put out and it
blacked an already bruised eye in Detroit.

My first HallowsEve in Detroit, was back in 1996… this was the 2nd
year of “Angles Night” – where volunteers took to the streets to help
curb fire out breaks. Corny names aside, the program has been very
effective and I hope the City does well tonight.

To celebrate “Devils Night” in San Antonio, I’ll be taking my pet to
a “Paws on the Patio” benefit for the local humane society. I don’t
really know what to expect… I know that it’s the 7th annual, so I
anticipate a strong showing. For 10 dollars, my little Elliot will
get to dine on a 3 course meal… all of that money will going to a
proper cause.

I’ll update the the site with photos later this evening.

Update: Happy to report that the “Paws on the Patio” event went incredibly well. My sister and I were very fortunate to get seated next to a group of very calm pets. The turn out (I think) was steady and successful. We arrived minutes before 7 PM and our wait for a table was 5 minutes. I had a fabulous Southwest Chicken Sandwich that I recommend highly to anyone going to the Canyon Cafe… The dogs had a three course meal that consisted of:

• A chicken, veggie & rice appetizer… My dog seemed to enjoy this one the most.
• The main dish was a “poodle noodle” that appeared to be beef/noodles & cheese. Elliot didn’t particularly show much interest in it. We joked that our dogs dismissed the dinner because of the carb content.
• For desert, a Peanut Butter & Yogurt in a plastic cup with a doggie chew stick stuck within it…. the dogs didn’t seem to care for the smell of this either.

When not assisting my pet in scarfing down a prepared kitchen meal, I spent time walking around the event meeting other folk who brought their pets and spoke with some volunteers of the humane society. The event was very organized and much to my surprise the event had incredibly well behaved and social pets.

A large number of the pets in attendance were larger dogs. This was hella cool because there’s nothing like running your full hand into a shaggy back of dog hair.

It was a very different Devils Night but a cool one none the less.

the Dash

Posted by september29th on Oct 30 2006 | Life

I finally did it. I left SPRINT last week and hopped over to T-Mobile so that I could use the HTC Dash. I’ve been holding out on purchasing a smart phone until it met of personal requirements…. and this phone did all those things and some.

The Specs : I won’t spend too much time discussing the specs of the phone. It has a full qwerty key layout, with EDGE and WiFi that I can use when I’m in a T-Mobile Hot-Spot (Starbucks and stuff) and at home.

It also has strong personal and corporate e-mail capabilities with the ability for me to log onto any Instant Message client I have on the go.

It all runs on Windows Mobile 5 (which sorta sucks, but I’m not very familiar with Palm, Symbian (sp?) or RIM so what do I know) which worried me at first, being a Mac user… but I had some reassurance when I read someone had success getting a Dash to work in OS X with the use of Mark/Space.

I got all my contacts (phone numbers and email addys) to port over by USB without any issues, along with my iCal information. The ability to do that made me incredibly happy with the device.

I also managed to tinker with the ringtone settings… so I put a 11 second snipit of Slayer’s Reign in Blood to sound off when my phone rings. *hotness*

The OS layout of Windows Mobile 5 is a little upsetting… I’ve really taken a liking to one specific layout setting, but I can’t manage to get a background image to set in for my background without having a mysterious white block run at the bottom of my screen.

Strictly a cosmetic complaint, but its something I hope to get figured out in recent weeks.

What else? I think thats about it. I got my personal email account to rock-out nicely on it so you can write me at september29th@mac.com and I’ll get the message within a number of minutes.

Hit me up with any questions on this if you’re looking to pick one up.

CONTACt

Posted by september29th on Oct 30 2006 | DS, Nintendo, Video Games

With Final Fantasy III not dropping on the DS till mid-November, I opted to pick up a RPG for my DS so that I can have something to play on weekends I go down to visit my parents.

I’m not terribly far in the game but it’s one of coolest RPG’s I’ve played in recent memory. I really don’t know how to describe it just yet… It’s about an alien aircraft and I have a hankering to throw on OK Computer by Radiohead, when I play it.

If you’re hard up for a RPG and you have a DS – hook this up. It should hold you over until FFIII comes out.

Tiger Woods 07

Posted by september29th on Oct 30 2006 | Video Games

Picked up a copy of Tiger Woods 07 for the 360 last week… the game is visually stunning in HD and it’s managed to keep DEAD RISING out of the system for the entire weekend.

By far the best sports game I’ve played on the 360. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for something to rock out over the winter break.

Weekend = DVD time. : Brick (film) & Kill Your Idols (documentary)

Posted by september29th on Oct 30 2006 | DVD

The weekend was rather quiet and relaxing for me… Got around to watching some excellent DVD’s I had in the mail.

First up: Kill Your Idols (documentary)

Filmed a few years ago, Kill Your Idols takes a closer look at the post-punk (No-Wave) scene of NYC and a rather recent look at bands that have emerged in a re-defined nYc. (Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Black Dice, Liars, A.R.E. Weapons and the Gogol Bordello) Footage of DNA and interviews with the Theoretical Girls make the disc worthwhile to watch, but the purpose of the documentary takes a strange turn when the latter provides a platform for current bands to showcase their dislike for other NYC bands.

Second Up: Brick (film)

Highly recommend anyone wanting to watch a film with some substance. The film is murder mystery set in a high-school
setting… a scenario that made me put the rental off for a number of months, but I was pleasantly surprised by the look and feel of picture.

Light at the end of the tunnel…

Posted by september29th on Oct 23 2006 | Pop Culture

For years… I’ve heard people talk about the hopes they pinned on Robert Kennedy… and I never quite understood the energy a good politician could have on people.

If there’s one politician that seems to have a similar amount of “hope” pinned to his career, its Barack Obama.

You have no idea how thrilled I was to hear that he would seriously consider running for President of the United States of America.

Rarely are there things to truly look forward to…

Dead Rising

Posted by september29th on Oct 23 2006 | Video Games

A few months ago when I picked up my XBOX 360, I debated which games to seriously consider for purchase at the time I picked up my system. A game I foolishly stayed away from for too long was DEAD RISING by Capcom.

The game is possibly one of the most enjoyable games I’ve played in recent months. It easily rivals Star Wars Legos II for my favorite game of 2006…

If you’re on the fence on this one – I highly recommend that you drop everything you’re doing and pick this one up.
