They came for the Monty Python, they stayed for the board games…

Posted by september29th on Feb 28 2010 | Board Games, Life

Saturday nite was supposed to be an evening out at the local Alamo Draft house so that Fin could watch Monty Python’s and the Holy Grail… but buying tickets online became an ordeal, we got contradictory information from members of the theater so we opted to just have our friend Nano loan us the DVD and we had some friends over for a viewing of the Holy Grail…

After a few drinks we decided to break out a board game I got for Fin’s birthday, called “Ticket to Ride”. A game that requires players to complete destinations between US and Canadian cities thru the collection of color cards.

All in all, it was a hit with our friends and I managed to squeak out a 1 point win over my friend Henry.

The second game we played was more of a drunken favorite.  It’s a game called “Time’s Up”…  Everyone get’s a set of cards that contains names of books, movies, songs, artists, pop culture stuff.

The objective of the game is to get your partner to say what is on the card by using words that are not on the card in the first round.   Only using one word & gestures in the 2nd round and only using gestures in the 3rd.

Here’s a snip of me doing the gesture round last night….

All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn’t give it to me.

Sunday morning got here a little to quickly for my liking.  It seems like Saturday came and went in a blink…

Had some friends over last night to watch a Movie…  we had some drinks and the next thing I know we’re getting drunk and playing board games.

The idea of breakfast was a little difficult to stomach, but Chivo twisted my arm and we went over to a local Mexican market for tacos and Mexican Pepsi.

So let me get this straight, this plate is made of plantains too?

In the 4 or so years that I’ve been in San Antonio, Chivo has been begging me to take him to a restaurant called “La Marginal”.

It’s a little Puerto Rican place, off of 410 and Nacogdoches…   I don’t know why haven’t gone in all the years that we’ve lived here.  I don’t frequent too many Puerto Rican places I guess…

Chivo went down to La Isla de Encanto a few years ago and since his return… he’s swooned over their dishes.   I asked Fin if she was interested and it turns out the restaurant is one of her mothers favorite places to eat in Town and Fin enjoyed to food the one time she went.

All in all, I must say the food rocked verily.  I had a fried pork dish called – La Bohia that was accompanied with a salad, white rice, black beans and you guessed it – bananas.

My favorite thing we got was an order of “Alcapurria”…   a fried plantain I think that had some sort of meat inside.   I thought it was a potato of some sort… but Chivo insisted it was plantain.   I really shouldn’t argue about it, its a staple of almost every dish.

The service was pretty bad in my opinion but Chivo insisted that this was on par for any authentic latin restaurant.  This I didn’t get or understand because slow is slow in any place of the world.

In praise of : PSYCH

Posted by september29th on Feb 27 2010 | HDTV, Pop Culture

Just confirmed that Chivo is going to be heading down to San Antonio this afternoon… I should be running around the house getting a number of chores done, but I’m saddled firmly onto the couch watching episodes of Psych.

A show Fin got me into about a year ago and it’s possibly my favorite show she DVR’s. The show itself is pretty formulaic. It’s about a guy with photographic memory, pretending to be a guy with Psychic abilities. He has a partner who is really just the voice of reason and follows protocol for the most part.

The dialogue is amazing tho’. Which is the reason why I tune in every week. If you haven’t seen this, do so. You’ll dig it verily.

Did I also mention that the show has an iPhone case that I would totally snag? I need to update my Gen 1 iPhone at some point this year and this may help convince me to do so quicker…

I asked her name and in a dark grey voice she said, “Nola”

I can’t recall the last time I looked so forward to a Friday nite…   the work week is finally over and I’m going to get some much need sleep and relaxation.

Fin is in the kitchen preparing supper for two in the kitchen and I’m hanging out on the couch with our kitten Nola.  She’s not overly affection with me… but for whatever reason she seems to be all about me this evening.

One thing I like to do is sing the song “Lola” by the Kinks to her but change the name to hers… which explains the title of the post.

I came in here for the special offer, A guaranteed personality

Going to the Supermarket is highly underrated in my opinion… there’s never a visit where I don’t pick something up that I’ve never seen.   I don’t know much about “bargain” shopping…   I don’t really understand how to read the back of the “contents” guide to let me know if something is good for you either.

I usually just push the cart around and try to keep pace with Fin.   Every now and again, she stops long enough for me to pick up stuff I’ve never seen to admire packaging.

Tonight was no different, I picked up some stuff called Pocky. I don’t really know what it is…  thin biscotti I thought.  I asked Fin if it was a delicious coffee or tea stir stick but she said it was a desert.

The packaging was pretty boss.   The box is fire truck red with a glossy finish.

Is there anything cooler than getting to sit down at your first day at work and begin working on your new puter?

Got a heads up yesterday that I would be outfitted with a Macbook Pro 17″ and Apple Display for my desk…  I’m running the latest version of Parallels to keep up with the other Windows users at work… more on this in the coming weeks.

A shower to wash away all those concerns…

Posted by september29th on Feb 23 2010 | 365 Photo

Tomorrow is a big day of sorts… I start a new job, at a new place of employment and I will have to adjust to a new schedule.  Which means I will have to go to bed earlier and get up a lot earlier than I’m accustomed too.

Got word that I wouldn’t have to be there until 9:00 am, so I won’t have to rush out the door to insanely early.  It’s a bit of a commute tho’, so I look forward to listening to some new podcasts on my drive in.

Opted to shower and shave tonight so that I could sleep a little easier knowing that I could take my time tomorrow morning.

Bust those suds…

Monday is just about wrapped up…  it was an eventful day of sorts.  Went into Time Warner today to put in my 2 Week notice, expecting to be escorted out of the building after completing an exit interview…   I would describe the process as an amicable break.

Contacted human resources to confirm some details regarding my insurance and flexible spending…  so I then made sure to make it over to an optometrist for a new pair of glasses and made it over to a CVS to fill up on Over the Counter medications so that I wouldn’t have any FSA money go to waste…

Fin split for work so, that gave me an opportunity to just have dinner at home and wash some dishes before bed.

Good things to come this week….

So why are you so Anchorless?

Posted by september29th on Feb 21 2010 | Life

Began to pen this entry on the morning of Feb. 19th, the last day of my three day trip to the Rio Grande Valley…  the trip was unplanned in that, I received a phone call last weekend by my friend Jaime who had to rush home for a family emergency.

This phone call is always the one you wish you never have to take, but you do so because life long friendships call for you to simply drop things that may be going on in your life to simply be there for someone – hug them tightly to communicate to them what you can’t put forth in words.

It was truly a week to reflect on life, the love you have for your friends, the love I have for Fin and the love I have for her family and my own.

***************

Occurred to me this morning that for the first time ever in my adult life, I’ve brought home a girl to not only meet my parents but to stay with us as a guest.  Fin is currently sound asleep in my childhood bedroom and she doesn’t know this but I’m beaming with joy.  I’m so incredibly happy that I had an opportunity to have the past three days around my parents and share something with her that I’ve never done before in my life.

I’m staring out at a short stack of embarrassing photos that my mom dug up to share with Fin yesterday…   a bonding moment of sorts that often gets showcased in shitty movies and television sitcoms.  It’s taken me a little longer than some to have my mom get the opportunity to roast me, but I wouldn’t have it any other way….
