Amerivespa thru the lens of Hackett’s iPhone

So my friend Hackett put together a little youtube video of some iPhone footage he took over the weekend.

So many good memories…

Healthy Robert can’t be trusted with a camera

Posted by september29th on May 31 2010 | 365 Photo

So I meet up with my friend Robert Kelly this evening over at a local sea food restaurant…   I didn’t have supper yet and I haven’t had sea food in a while so we met up at San Pedro with hopes of catching a movie.  Our friend Henry agrees to meet up with us but he’s running a little late because of an errand he was running with his sister so we ended up just talking shit over dinner and playing with each other’s iphones…

it occurs to me that I don’t have a photo of the day yet and ask robert to take a snap shot.   he agrees to do so and grabs one of my gut testing the limits of a button up shirt I had on…

I called him “Healthy Robert” on account of an iPhone app that lets us know his running stats after his morning jogs…

Amerivespa 2010 (day 4) : the final day for me…

Posted by september29th on May 30 2010 | Amerivespa 2010

So Amerivespa wrapped up today for many attendees…  there’s an organized ride out to Austin tomorrow, but I’m going to pass on that so that I can get ready for work at my new place of employment on Tuesday.

The day consisted of a few rides but it all centered around the gymkhana and raffle for scooters.  I had hoped to post an entry this evening about Fin and I winning a scooter but it wasn’t in the cards for us.

I did however get to spend a great afternoon with friends in the city.  Had dinner with my friend Henry and then spent the evening with my friend Hackett and some new pals I made from Austin.

It was possibly one of the best moments of the weekend because we all had that feeling that the weekend was coming to a close.  For some people, it meant that they had to return to work or return to their homes…  for me it meant that I would have to put my focus into starting my new job.

I still can’t believe that Amerivespa was here in San Antonio.

The High Life indeed…

Posted by september29th on May 30 2010 | 365 Photo

Had a moment this afternoon to just sit back and catch up with some scooter friends and make some new ones from Austin.

My friend Hackett grabbed my camera and helped a brother out with the photo of the day.

We came for record release party, we left with a Soundtrack for our Summer

Posted by september29th on May 30 2010 | Music

When we made it out to the Limelight the other night to catch a few local Ska bands, Fin noticed on the marquee that the Wild Moccasins would be playing the following night in support of their record release.  The decision to come out was an easy one, seeing how we really enjoyed their short set a year or so ago over at the G.I.G.

Prior to any of the acts taking the stage we got a chance to meet some of the Wild Moccasins and secured some merch.  Fin picked up a really cool shirt that I need to take a photo of and we also picked up their latest full length.

The first act was a three piece out of Austin that goes by Transmography. They can lazily be described as 8-bit/Synth… most of their stuff was instrumental.  I wished the drums were miked a little better, they were pretty pleasant to catch and a great opening act for the other two bands.

The Wild Moccasins followed and they put on a great set.  The setlist had a lot of new material I wasn’t familiar with but I’m really excited to tear into our new disc.  I would describe some of the new stuff as being more layered… especially with swirling guitar effects.  The band appears to feel more confident and comfortable on stage.  I noticed that they had a new drummer on skins.  He’s just as energetic as the last one… I’m not sure if this is a permanent change of if he was just filling in for the night.  I’d be curious to hear if their bassist is at all reluctant to play live or not.  It took a few tracks before he seemed to lock eyes with anyone that wasn’t on the stage.   His bass lines really make a number of their tracks infectious…  I hope to be in attendance on a night when he gets to come out of his shell.

Big Soy (from San Antonio) took the stage afterward.  We stuck around for a few tracks…  the two piece were pretty bombed and I didn’t really feel up to hanging around for the drunken banter between songs.   Their set was pretty tight nonetheless tho’.

Amerivespa (Day 3): I went to a banquet and an Orgy was born!

Posted by september29th on May 30 2010 | Amerivespa 2010

So day 3 of Amerivespa was a slow one…   the Hotel had a number of events going on and we made it down to see some of the scoots that were on display for the “best Scoot _____”  judging.

There were no rides scheduled throughout the day and a Banquet/Dinner was held at the hotel so we made it down to hang with some friends before going to a show at the Limelight.

The banquet honored a few recognizable folk around town and I’m glad a number of people got recognized….  A lot of it could be described and self petting tho’.  My favorite part was hearing that Amerivespa 2011 will be in New Orleans.

Night Clubin’

Posted by september29th on May 29 2010 | 365 Photo

In many ways…  we took a night off from Amerivespa tonight and we made it down to the Limelight after the dinner banquet.  Tonight we hit the clubs the Limelight (thank you Fin) on St. Mary’s…

Amerivespa: Day 2

Posted by september29th on May 29 2010 | Amerivespa 2010, Scooting

Day 2 of Amerivespa has come and gone and it was one of the most exhausting day’s I’ve had on a scooter.

Fin and I made it downtown a little after 12 O’Clock to meet up with some friends for the Afternoon Ride.  We had a few options to choose from and we ended up choosing a “market square” ride which consisted of stopping at frequent places around the city to escape the brutal heat.

One of the cool things we got to do was stop at the San Antonio downtown Mercado.  I’ve been meaning to go for years but haven’t… while there we checked out lucha libre masks and we also got some photos of me in a pink sombrero.  Good times.

After the Ride, Fin and I got a burger at a place called Armadillos…  it was pretty forgettable in my opinion but it was a place I’ve been wanting to check out so I’m happy we stopped in nonetheless.

We then made it back to the hotel where we met up with friends.  We then rode down as a group into south town for dinner and drinks.

One of the killer events of the weekend was the Lucha Libre they arranged at one of the downtown Ice Houses.   While watching some of the matches I got to hold one of the wrestling belts when a Luchador realized he didn’t have a corner man to hold his belt.

After that died down we made it over to a local club to catch some local ska bands (Channel 1  and   Spies Like Us)   Both were awesome….  we were however more happy to find out that the Wild Moccasins are back in town and we’re going to check out the record release show this evening.

Above are photos of all the shit I’ve just ranted about.  Video credit goes out to Hacket who caught it on his iPhone.   Fin took a number of the downtown photos while riding behind me.

Taking it all in

Made it over to the friendly spot after a full day of riding the scooter.  The rally is putting on a Lucha Libre  match and we have front row seats.  Good times.

Amerivespa 2010 : Day 1

Posted by september29th on May 27 2010 | Amerivespa 2010, Scooting

So day one of Amerivespa 2010 is in the books.   I had a busy day and didn’t get to take part in the tubing ride just outside of the city but saw that someone has posted photos of the tubing trip that I could link out.

Tubing

I did however get our registration shit done tho’.   Picked up our swag bag and here are some of the highlights.

So…. if you liked the Amerivespa logo – then you’re in luck because its pretty much on everything which sorta sucks in my opinion.  I wish they would have had fresh ideas for the patches and the shirts.

The patch itself is a little weird when you have it up close. I think the color selection and patch quality is a little off.  Haven’t heard anyone make the same complaint tho’.

The shirts were available in three forms…  the guys got them in an olive color and the gals got them in brown with a v-neck.  I saw a girl with black muscle shirt who said they were an option if you got it as a small.

Lastly the swag bags had a couple of interesting keepsakes.  One was a manual fan (with your favorite jackalope) and 2010 Amerivespa Keychain that didn’t have the official logo on it.  I think this is my favorite keepsake of all.
